SDK’s Omachi Plant Produces 2.5 Million Tons of Graphite Electrodes

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) at its Omachi Plant (Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture) has produced a total of 2.5 million tons of graphite electrodes since its start of business in the 1930s.  The record was established on October 22.

SDK started producing graphite electrodes for aluminum smelting and electric steelmaking at the Omachi Plant in the 1930s.  Since then, the company has supplied its products to major electric steelmakers at home and abroad, achieving the status as a leading graphite electrode producer in the world.  The Omachi Plant, with a history of around 80 years and total production of 2.5 million tons, serves as the main site for the development of new products and processes.

Graphite electrodes are used for making steel by melting iron scrap in electric arc furnaces. Demand for graphite electrodes is expected to increase steadily, centering on emerging markets where supply of iron scrap will increase.  
To meet the growing demand, the Omachi Plant is now in the process of upgrading its existing production facilities.  Furthermore, Showa Denko Carbon, Inc., a subsidiary of SDK established in the United States in 1988, is carrying out its project to expand its graphite electrode production capacity from 45,000 t/y at present, to 75,000 t/y by 2013.  SDK also decided early this year to acquire equity interest in Sinosteel Sichuan Carbon Co., Ltd., a graphite electrode production company in China.  Thus, SDK is strengthening the competitiveness of its graphite electrode business on a global scale, with the Omachi Plant serving as the mother plant.

Under the current medium-term consolidated business plan PEGASUS, the graphite electrode business is positioned as SDK’s main business, together with the hard disk media business.  We will take various steps to develop new markets, while continuing to improve our production system and developing new technologies.
