SDK Group to Up LIB Packaging Material Production Capacity

May 15, 2013

Showa Denko Packaging Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Showa Denko K.K. (SDK), has decided to increase its production capacity for aluminum laminated films used for packaging lithium ion batteries (LIBs).

This is in addition to the expansion work now under way at Showa Denko Packaging’s Hikone Plant in Shiga Prefecture, which is scheduled for completion in the second half of 2013 (announced on August 23, 2012). After the additional expansion announced today, Showa Denko Packaging’s production capacity at the end of 2014 will be increased by 1.5 times versus the level at the end of 2013, and by 3 times before the expansions.

Demand for small LIBs is growing due to the growth of smart devices such as smartphones and tablets. Showa Denko Packaging is offering its aluminum laminated film—a composite material of resin film and aluminum foil—for packaging small LIBs. Compared with metallic LIBs (either cylindrical type or prism type), aluminum-laminated-film-based pouch type LIBs provide higher flexibility in molding, lighter weight, and better heat dissipation. As a result, the share of pouch type in small LIBs is increasing.

The market for aluminum laminated films used for LIB packaging is expected to amount to about ¥25 billion in 2015, twice the scale of market in 2012.

The Showa Denko Group will work to maintain its leading market share and further improve the product quality. Thus, the Group will aim to ensure stable supply of its high-quality aluminum laminated films to meet the growing demand for LIBs.
