October 30, 2013

Showa Denko (SDK) (TOKYO: 4004) has received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Prize in the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Promotion Merit Awards (3Rs Promotion Merit Awards) in FY2013. The Prize was awarded to commend the Showa Denko Group’s aluminum can recycling activity that has been promoted by all employees of the Group for more than 40 years.

The 3Rs Promotion Merit Awards are hosted by the Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Promotion Council, which consists of about 80 organizational members including consumer groups and industrial associations, designed to yearly commend individuals, groups and schools conspicuously contributing to the promotion of activities to reduce, reuse and recycle wastes.

This aluminum can recycling activity started in 1972 as a voluntary activity of employees, taking advantage of the fact that Showa Aluminum Can Corporation, a subsidiary of SDK, had started manufacturing aluminum cans for drinkables for the first time in Japan in 1971. Nowadays, the activity has become a group-wide activity participated by all employees of the Showa Denko Group. Furthermore, going beyond the Group, many workplaces now have used aluminum can collection programs jointly operated with local communities. The earnings from the collected aluminum cans are donated to local social welfare councils, year-end charity campaign and circles for handicapped persons, and utilized for welfare activities of local communities.

The Showa Denko Group will continue to actively promote 3Rs through various social actions including aluminum can recycling activity. The Group will also continue contributing to mitigation of environmental burden through further development of environment friendly products including materials for lithium ion rechargeable batteries and SiC epitaxial wafers for power devices.

Masaru Amano, Director & Corporate Officer of SDK, receives the award certificate at the ceremony
