November 20, 2013
Showa Denko (SDK) (TOKYO:4004) has started this month commercial shipments of 2.5-inch hard disk (HD) media with storage capacity of 670 gigabytes per disk, using the seventh-generation perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology.
To the best of our knowledge, our new 2.5-inch HD media have the world’s highest storage capacity for this size available on the market today. While SDK is now mainly supplying 2.5-, and 3.5-inch sixth-generation PMR media, the company will take the lead in commercializing higher-capacity media with the launch of the seventh-generation 2.5-inch media.
As the world’s largest independent HD media supplier, SDK will aim to ensure stable supply of high-capacity media. The company will also continue to develop world-leading technologies and meet customer requirements in terms of quality as well as quantity.

1.PMR technology:
Compared with the conventional technology that stores magnetic data on a horizontal plane of the HD media, the PMR technology enables vertical magnetic recording, resulting in a dramatic increase in recording density.
2.SDK’s HD media based on the PMR technology are classified as shown in the table below according to respective storage capacities.
(Unit: gigabytes per disk; as of November 20, 2013)Generation | 2.5-inch | 3.5-inch |
1 | 80 | 160 |
2 | 120 | 250 |
3 | 160 | 334 |
4 | 250 | 500 |
