SDK Offers Innovative Cosmetic Material

November 13, 2001

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has started production and sale of an innovative, high-performance biosurfactant for cosmetic applications under the trade name of Aminofect. This material--surfactin sodium salt--is not irritating to the skin and can be used in cleansing cream as well as various types of milky lotions and cleaning agents.

In recent years, there has been a growing demand for cosmetics containing gentle-on-the-skin ingredients because consumers are increasingly concerned about skin dryness, stretch, itching and irritation. The growth in numbers of atopic dermatitis cases is also increasing the need for such cosmetics.

Surfactin sodium salt has been known for many years as biosurfactant, but its industrial use has so far been delayed due to its extremely low productivity. SDK has recently succeeded in accumulating highly concentrated surfactin sodium salt using its proprietary process.

Evaluation results confirmed that our Aminofect is highly surface active, showing high emulsification stability and dispersion by addition of a small amount. It has also been confirmed that Aminofect provides substantially lower degree of skin irritation than conventional "low irritation" grades, while being highly biodegradable and safe.

Owing to the properties described above, addition of a small amount of Aminofect enables smooth production of oil-based transparent gel for use in a wide range of cosmetic products.

Making full use of the advantages of the material, SDK will accelerate the development of the market for Aminofect in the area of cosmetics. Aminofect was registered in March this year as a new cosmetic material under the Pharmaceuticals Affairs Law. SDK will also try to develop industrial applications in fields other than cosmetics.

Annual sales of Aminofect are expected to reach ¥1 billion in several years from now
