SDK Aims To Expand Elastomers Business

October 10, 2002

With the new start of its polychloroprene business under the new trade name of "Shoprene,"Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) aims to take various steps to expand its elastomers business.

While promoting the sale of "Shoprene" for existing industrial applications, SDK will develop latex-type product. Furthermore, new applications and grades will be developed through increased R&D efforts and joint development with customers.

SDK will also strengthen its chlorinated polyethylene ("Elaslen") business. While "Elaslen" is now used mainly as modifier for hard PVC (polyvinyl chloride) and flame-retardant ABS (acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) resins, SDK will develop sophisticated new applications by taking advantage of excellent electric insulation and high filler-loading properties of "Elaslen."

SDK last year placed on the market a flame-retardant elastomer "Ecoflamer," which contains a small amount of halogen, and steadily increasing its sales. In addition, SDK will start selling, by the end of this year, a new type of chlorinated synthetic rubber having superior weatherability and color tone. Development of environment-friendly unplasticized elastomer and fluorinated rubber is now in progress.

SDK is also developing specialty compounds by consolidating the Group's technical strengths concerning inorganic materials and fillers as well as organic materials and surface treatment. This category includes photocatlyst / ultraviolet ray absorbent / conductive polymer master batches and radio wave shielding compound.

SDK plans to expand annual sales of its elastomers and specialty polymers business to billion in three years' time.
