SDK to Supply Aluminum Radiator to F1 Team "B.A.R. Honda"

June 7, 2004

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has concluded an agreement with B.A.R, a Formula 1 team based in the United Kingdom, to supply aluminum radiators. SDK’s radiator was installed in B.A.R Honda’s machine used in the San Marino Grand Prix—the fourth race for 2004—held on April 25. B.A.R Honda won the second prize both in the San Marino Grand Prix and the Monaco Grand Prix, which was held on May 23.

SDK has developed radiators for commercial vehicles in cooperation with Honda Motor Co., Ltd. and supplied the products to Honda over the years. Based on the results of technical cooperation, SDK and Honda have been discussing since 2001 the possibility of SDK supplying aluminum radiators for B.A.R Honda’s machines used in the F1 race, the greatest of all motor sports.

After a series of experiments under extreme conditions, SDK and Honda have jointly succeeded in developing an aluminum radiator with drastically reduced weight in 2002. Then, a yearlong durability test was conducted in 2003, which led to the conclusion of a formal agreement to supply the radiator to B.A.R.

SDK is expanding its fabricated aluminum products business, including automotive heat exchanger components, as one of the “strategic growth businesses.” SDK will continue to meet customer requirements by fully utilizing its advanced technology valued by the world of F1.
