SDK Establishes “Green Purchase” Guidelines

December 17, 2004

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has established Green Purchase Guidelines as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. Based on the guidelines, SDK will preferentially purchase environment-friendly products to contribute to the protection of the global environment.

The so-called green purchase law, enforced in April 2001 in Japan, requires government agencies to consider environment-friendliness in addition to its cost and quality when they make a purchase. Corporations and local governments are recommended to act in the same manner.

SDK considers that the green purchase forms part of its Responsible Care activities, as well. Since March 1995, SDK has been implementing Responsible Care programs, aiming to ensure the safety and health of our employees and of people everywhere as well as to protect the environment throughout entire life cycles of chemical substances.

SDK will hereafter purchase products from the viewpoint of environment-friendliness in addition to the conventional criteria of product quality, price, delivery, service, and supplier’s technical development capability. Specifically, SDK will consider supplier’s commitment to environmental protection when SDK has the right to specify materials in SDK’s specifications. Furthermore, as to the purchase of equipment in which suppliers decide on specifications and materials, SDK will consider environment-friendliness of the equipment.

Thus, SDK will preferentially purchase stationery and other commodities that have eco-labelling or conform to the green purchase law. As for raw materials and packaging materials purchased by respective business sectors of SDK, valuation standards will be established for each item based on the guidelines. Supplier valuation standards will also be established, at the time of the preparation of specifications, to choose suppliers of equipment.

SDK is committed to the principles of CSR as essential part of its management strategy for sustainable growth and long-term value. SDK will continue to provide products and services that are useful and safe, and develop new technologies to better protect the environment.
