Swedish Hospital Adopts SDK’s Anesthetic Gas Disposal System

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) delivered its innovative waste anesthetic gas disposal system (trade name: Anesclean-SW) to Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge, Stockholm County, the Kingdom of Sweden on December 16.

The Environment Department of the Stockholm County Council, which is carrying out various environmental protection and health care projects based on its five-year (2002-2006) plan, aims to reduce nitrous oxide (N2O) emission from hospitals to 50% of the 2001 level by the end of 2006.

The N2O emission from large hospitals in the Stockholm County, most of which coming from painless deliveries, now amounts to approximately 30 tons a year (equivalent to 9,000 tons of CO2). With the installation of Anesclean-SW system, the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge will be able to reduce its N2O emission by about five tons a year (equivalent to 1,500 tons of CO2).

N2O is a greenhouse gas having global warming potential about 300 times that of CO2 and is extremely stable in the atmosphere. Developed by SDK in 2002, Anesclean is the world’s first system that decomposes N2O used as inhalation anesthetic at hospitals and, at the same time, removes volatile anesthetic through adsorption. Anesclean has the following advantages:

  • 1.Decomposes N2O into nitrogen and oxygen, without generating NOx.
  • 2.Recovers volatile anesthetic using a special adsorbent.
  • 3.Quickly responds to and disposes of waste anesthetic gases.
  • 4. A space-saving compact device.

SDK last year made presentations on Anesclean to the Stockholm County Council after receiving its inquiry in October 2002. The council initiated a bidding process in January this year and SDK’s bid was accepted in June. After the signing of contract in September, SDK installed the Anesclean-SW device at the delivery room of the Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge at the end of October. A one-month trial run, which began in the middle of November, has been successful. This represents the world’s first installation of an N2O decomposition device at a delivery room.

In the ongoing medium-term consolidated business plan the “Sprout Project,” SDK is promoting its specialty chemicals business for the growing personal care/environmental goods market.
