SDK Subsidiary Develops Aluminum Cups for Chilled Coffee

Showa Denko Packaging Co., Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Showa Denko K.K. (SDK), has developed aluminum cups for beverages, mainly for chilled coffee. This represents the industry’s first aluminum cups for chilled coffee, and Coca-Cola (Japan) Company, Limited has adopted this aluminum cup in its new high-grade café au lait product (PatissiolleTM) launched late last month.

So far, plastic cups have been used for chilled coffee sold at convenience stores. As there is no need for heat sterilization and coffee’s flavor is well preserved, the demand for chilled cup coffee is growing. At the same time, it is now considered stylish to sip coffee through a straw.

Compared with conventional plastic cups, the newly developed aluminum cups for chilled coffee have the following advantages:

  • 1.Higher shielding effectiveness, resulting in lower oxygen permeation. This ensures preservation of the natural flavor and taste of coffee.
  • 2.The main bodies of the cups can be recycled as aluminum metal.
  • 3.The world’s first metallic drinking cups, saving storage space due to their stackability.

Showa Denko Packaging provides sophisticated packaging materials by fully utilizing the Showa Denko Group’s aluminum and laminated plastic technologies. Specifically, the company focuses on such applications as food packaging (cap seals, aluminum foil containers), electronics packaging (polymer battery housings) and medical packaging.

With the launch of the new aluminum cups for chilled beverages, Showa Denko Packaging aims to increase its annual sales to ¥15.5 billion by 2010.
