SAC Wins Silver Prize of "Cans of the Year 2007" Awards

Showa Aluminum Can Corporation (SAC), a consolidated subsidiary of Showa Denko K.K. (SDK), won a silver prize of the Cans of the Year 2007 Awards for its development of two-piece aluminum cans for “PRIME TIME” brand beer of Asahi Breweries, Ltd.

The prize was awarded at the Canmaker Summit 2007 held last month in Chicago. The Canmaker, an authoritative magazine of the U.K., annually holds a contest for the global metal packaging industry to encourage innovation and development of novel designs.

The prize winner features an elegant appeal because of its plain logo design of “PRIME TIME” in gold letters on a deep-blue ground. Furthermore, the can has matt finish owing to the dispersion of glass-based fine particles in transparent coating, giving an impressive appearance and smooth touch.

Following the success of this premium beer, there is an increasing trend toward introduction of aluminum cans with matt coating.

In 1971, SAC became the first Japanese company to manufacture aluminum cans. Since then, the company has been leading the aluminum can industry through various innovations. SAC will continue meeting customers’ requirements by developing resource-saving lightweight cans and offering new products, such as cans printed with elaborate designs.


The Cans of the Year contest covers 11 categories, including three SAC-related categories of “Beverage two-piece,” “Ends, Caps & Closures” and “Bottles.”
