SDK Starts Shipments of 1.3-Inch PMR-Technology-Based HD Media

January 10, 2008

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has started commercial shipments of 1.3-inch hard disk (HD) media with storage capacity of 40 gigabytes per disk, using the innovative perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology. The media are to be installed in hard disk drives (HDDs) as small in size as Compact FlashTM Type ¶. To the best of our knowledge, our new 1.3-inch HD media have the world’s highest storage capacity for this size available on the market today.

The 1.3-inch-media-containing HDDs will provide larger storage capacity at lower costs compared with Compact FlashTM memory cards, and ensure lower electricity consumption and higher resistance to shock than 1.89-inch-media-containing HDDs. Thus, demand for the new 1.3-inch PMR-technology-based HD media is expected to grow for such applications as high-definition camcorders, mobile music players and very small notebook PCs.

In June 2005, SDK became the world’s first company to use the PMR technology for commercial production of HD media, enabling a dramatic increase in recording density. SDK is already offering 1.89-, 2.5-, and 3.5-inch HD media based on the PMR technology, all having the world’s highest storage capacity for each category at this moment.

Demand for high-capacity HD media is growing year by year in line with increases in shipments of PCs that enable storage/editing of moving pictures, HDD recorders that can record high-definition TV programs, and high-definition camcorders. SDK has established a setup for ensuring speedy and stable deliveries of HD media based on the PMR technology.

Under the Passion Project, a three-year consolidated business plan that runs from 2006 through 2008, SDK is allocating a substantial amount of resources and promoting R&D for the HD media operation as the company’s largest “growth-driver business.” SDK will continue to satisfy customer needs as the world’s largest independent HD media supplier.
