Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has installed new aluminum melting furnaces for billet production at its Oyama Plant to ensure delivery of high-quality fabricated aluminum products to customers as well as to improve working conditions and operational safety. A ceremony was held today at the plant to mark the completion of the modernization of casting facilities, which had been under way since January 2007.

Specifically, SDK has introduced modern melting furnaces to replace existing ones and state-of-the-art equipment for inspecting the quality of billet. The new facilities will enable SDK to produce 60,000 tons a year of high-quality aluminum billets. The total investment in the new melting furnaces and auxiliary equipment amounted to ¥2.3 billion.

Most of the billets produced at the Oyama Plant are consumed within the SDK Group for the production of fabricated aluminum products. SDK intends to further strengthen its quality control and meet sophisticated requirements from customers.

With the completion of the modernization, SDK will be able to reduce CO2 emissions by approximately 13,000 tons a year.

SDK classifies its aluminum operation as a “base business,” and is proceeding with structural reforms to increase profitability of the aluminum business. In particular, SDK is expanding high-value product lines with competitive edges, such as aluminum cylinders for laser printers, automotive and motorcycle parts, and high-purity aluminum foils for electrolytic capacitors. SDK is also proceeding with price adjustment efforts in response to soaring aluminum ingot prices.
