SDK Publishes "CSR Report 2008"

Showa Denko K.K.
September 5, 2008

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) has published a report detailing its wide-ranging activities based on the principles of corporate social responsibility (CSR). The 68-page "CSR Report 2008" (A4 size, printed in color) explains how the Showa Denko Group is globally strengthening its ties with various stakeholders, while contributing to environmental protection and safety.

The CSR Report for this year contains feature articles concerning the Group's efforts to address the issue of global warming, as summarized below:

1.The Group's commitment to reduce GHG emissions by 6% from 1990 levels

The Group is working to achieve its goals for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2007, the Group achieved a 5% reduction from levels of 1990, the reference year under the Kyoto Protocol. The Group will also reduce emissions of GHGs other than CO2 and install modern cracking furnaces at its petrochemical complex, aiming to reduce GHG emissions during the commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol (2008-2012) by 6% on the average without relying on emission trading. Furthermore, the Group is considering long-term strategies for GHG reductions in the post-Kyoto era. The Group has started preparing an action plan, centering on drastic energy-conservation measures in production as well as radical changes in manufacturing processes and fuels/raw materials.

2.Introduction of the Group's businesses and products relating to GHG emission reductions

The Report introduces some examples of the Group's environment-friendly businesses and products, including the production of ammonia from recycled plastics (EcoannTM), ultrabright LED chips, aluminum beverage cans, and fuel cell components. Compared with the traditional process of producing ammonia from naphtha or natural gas, EcoannTM helps reduce CO2 emission by around 35% (in the case of SDK). In addition to the use as a raw material for synthetic fibers, resins and adhesives, EcoannTM is used for removing nitrogen oxide emissions from thermal electric power stations and other plants, contributing to reductions in environmental impact.

3.Employees' GHG emission reduction efforts at homes

The Group has participated in the Ministry of Environment’s "Team Minus 6%" campaign, encouraging its employees to reduce CO2 emissions at their homes. Group employees evaluate their monthly achievements and input the results in the company intranet. This provides a system for ensuring continuous efforts toward GHG emission reductions.

SDK will soon publish the Chinese version of the CSR Report 2008.

The Showa Denko Group is aiming to fulfill its social responsibility by enhancing corporate value and meeting all stakeholders' expectations. The Group will continue providing the market and society with full information on its CSR activities.
