SDK's Red LED Chips Adopted at METI's Plant Growth Facility

Showa Denko K.K.'s (SDK) aluminum-gallium-indium-phosphide (AlGaInP) LED chips that emit red light with wavelength of 660 nm have been adopted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) at its fully-controlled plant growth facility that supplies a model for such facilities to be built in Japan. The red light with wavelength of 660 nm is considered the optimum light for accelerating the growth of plants. SDK started selling samples of those LED chips in April this year.

The plant growth facility was installed at the lobby of METI's annex building at Kasumigaseki, Tokyo, in January this year to raise awareness of the importance of such facilities among consumers, enterprises, local governments, and other parties involved. In the initial stage, the facility used a combination of artificial light and sunlight. However, it was fully renewed on May 26 and started focusing on artificial light, including LED, fluorescent, and sodium lamps. Its temperature and humidity are also fully controlled. The facility's LED lamps contain a total of around 800 red LED chips supplied by SDK.

In recent years, facilities for growing vegetables in an environment of controlled lighting, temperature, humidity, CO2 concentration and nourishments are attracting attention as they ensure stabilized production regardless of season or place, and realize multiple cropping. Furthermore, they do not need fungicides or insecticides because of the controlled environment.

Under the Passion Extension, SDK is expanding its ultrabright LED chip operation—consisting of AlGaInP red LED chips and indium-gallium-nitride (InGaN) blue/green LED chips—as a “next-generation growth-driver” business. SDK is preferentially allocating its resources to these areas to further increase its value.
