SDK Group Recycles 6.2 Million Aluminum Cans in FY2010

Showa Denko K.K. (SDK) and its Group companies continued to perform their aluminum can recycling activities in fiscal 2010 (April 2010 – March 2011) as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiative, collecting approximately 6.2 million cans: equivalent to around 100 tons of aluminum when converted at the rate of 16.2 grams of aluminum per can.

The Group donates money resulting from the recycling activities to regional welfare organizations, charities, and volunteer groups that aid people with special needs.

When aluminum ingot is produced from recycled aluminum cans, the process requires only 3% of electricity necessary for production of ingot from ores by a refining/smelting process.  Thus, the Group is promoting its aluminum-can-recycling activities not only for contribution to regional communities but also for conservation of resources and energy.  As of the end of last year, 8,407 employees, or 94.3% of all Group employees in Japan, participated in the activities.

Showa Aluminum Can Corporation, a consolidated subsidiary of SDK, started producing aluminum-based beer cans in 1971 as the first company in Japan to do so.  In the following year, employees voluntarily started aluminum can recycling activities, which have spread across the Showa Denko Group and continued until today.  This year marks the 40th anniversary of these activities.

The Showa Denko Group is aggressively promoting CSR activities, including the aluminum can recycling.  Furthermore, as part of efforts to combat global warming and conserve energy, the Group will continue developing environment-friendly products and technologies, including production of lithium-ion battery materials, silicon carbide epitaxial wafers for power devices, and organic EL lighting.
