Showa Denko (SDK) (TOKYO:4004) and its Group companies continued to perform their aluminum can recycling activity in fiscal 2013 (April 2013 – March 2014), collecting approximately 5.43 million cans: equivalent to around 88 tons of aluminum when converted at the rate of 16.2 grams of aluminum per can.

Showa Aluminum Can Corporation, a consolidated subsidiary of SDK, started its aluminum can recycling activity in 1972. The activity spread across the Showa Denko Group in 2001, continuing until today. In fiscal 2013, a total of 8,729 employees, or 97.0% of all Group employees in Japan, participated in the activity. The participation rate was the highest on record.

The collected aluminum cans are purchased by the Group, and used mainly by Showa Aluminum Can Corporation to produce aluminum beverage cans. The Group donates the money resulting from the recycling activity to regional councils of social welfare, welfare facilities, and volunteer groups that aid people with special needs.

SDK received the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry’s Prize in 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycling) Promotion Merit Awards in 2013 for its aluminum can recycling activity having a history of more than 40 years. To further contribute to society, the Group will, in addition to aluminum can recycling, continue supporting local communities by performing cleaning activities in the neighborhoods of its work sites, providing chemistry experiment events for children, and sponsoring plant tours.
