SDK Starts Shipments of 2.5-Inch 750 GB HD Media

Showa Denko K.K.
February 5, 2015

Showa Denko (SDK) (Tokyo:4004) will start this March shipments of 2.5-inch hard disk (HD) media with storage capacity of 750 gigabytes per disk, the world’s highest storage capacity for this size available on the market to date1.

While SDK is now mass-producing 2.5- and 3.5-inch sixth- and seventh-generation HD media using perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) technology2, the new 2.5-inch HD media we start to ship in March is classified into the eighth-generation of PMR media3. SDK will continuously take the lead in commercializing higher-capacity media by making our successful development of this eighth-generation 2.5-inch media as a step to accelerate the development of next generation 2.5-inch HD media with storage capacity of 1 terabytes.

In the PhaseⅡof its medium-term consolidated business plan PEGASUS, SDK places the HD media business as one of two wings to dramatically improve the performance of the Showa Denko Group, while placing the graphite electrode business as the other wing. As the world’s largest independent HD media supplier, SDK will aim to ensure stable supply of high-capacity media. SDK will also continue meeting customer requirements in terms of quality as well as quantity.

  • 2.PMR technology:
Compared with the conventional technology that stores magnetic data on a horizontal plane of the HD media, the PMR technology enables vertical magnetic recording, resulting in a dramatic increase in recording density.
  • 3.SDK’s HD media based on the PMR technology are classified as shown in the table below according to respective storage capacities.

(Unit: gigabytes per disk; 1 terabytes (TB) = 1,000 gigabytes)

Generation 2.5-inch 3.5-inch
1 80 160
2 120 250
3 160 334
4 250 500
5 334 750
6 500 1TB
7 670 1.1~1.3TB
